I did a program called the Gills Club, where girls learn about Sharks.

I met Dr. Greg Skomal, from Shark Week in Chatham, MA! He is doing incredible things to save sharks and help people understand them better.

Whale sharks are my favorite! In November 2016, I got to meet Dr Lisa Hoopes and helped feed Whale Sharks at the Georgia Aquarium.
I love Sharks! Someday I want to be an Ichthyologist (shark scientist) but for now I just hope to teach people how important sharks are.

Here are a few of my favorite facts about sharks:
  • Sharks are actually very gentle, curious creatures. Most humans bitten by sharks are touching, hurting, or bothering the shark.
  • It's hard to see underwater, because the ocean is often dark and cloudy down deep but most sharks have excellent vision. Their night vision is better than a cat or a wolf.
  • A shark’s sense of smell is 10,000 times better than a humam.
  • Sharks can detect electrical impulses underwater, even the beating of another animal’s heart.
  • Sharks are picky eaters. They often take one bite of something before they decide to go in for the kill. This is why they often swim away after “tasting” a human, they like blubber like seals and whales to eat.
  • Sharks are important to keep our oceans healthy but humans kill 100 million sharks a year. Sharks need our help!

My friend Helen the Shark made this for me. She is a shark tagged by a group called OCEARCH. The tag on her dorsal fin that allows scientists to track her and learn more about sharks.
